William, the son of Clarence R. Franklin and Helen Franklin of Southgate MI, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 14, 1969 in Detroit MI. He arrived in Vietnam on January 26 1970, and was assigned to Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Operation IMPERIAL LAKE the first wave of Company I, landed at their designated LZ (Landing Zone) in the Que Son Mountains near Hill 341 in Duy Xuyen District and proceeded to sweep for booby traps. Two were discovered in the middle of the LZ and were disarmed, ordered to carefully leave the area but before all the men reached safety, a BT (Booby Trap) believed to have been a 20 or 30 LB Box mine was detonated. The explosion killed LCpl Franklin as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds and eight were wounded a requiring evacuation.
