EDDYVILLE, Ky. - James Shirley Althaus, age 80, of Eddyville, Kentucky, passed away at 8:20 a.m., Sunday, August 8, 2010, at his residence. The funeral service in his honor will begin at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938, with Reverend Dennis Kollross officiating. Interment will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, IL. Military rites will be conducted by the Mattoon VFW Post 4325. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Althaus was born November 14, 1929, in Mattoon, IL, the son of John and Pansy (West) Althaus. He married Barbara (Farr) Stewart in Eddyville, KY on May 25, 2005. She survives. Other survivors include his step children, Vickie Fletcher of Charleston, IL, Duane Stewart and close friend Tina Floyd of Mattoon, IL, John Stewart and wife Tina of Champaign, IL, and Jeanie Asmus of St. Louis, MO. He leaves several grandchildren, step grandchildren, great grandchildren, and step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers and six sisters. Mr. Althaus was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He served our country with the United States Navy until retiring November 1, 1976, having achieved the rank of Master Chief E9. He also retired from DuPont as an engineer and had worked at JMB Company as an engineer. Although piloting a Cherokee 180 was his first love, he also loved traveling both worldwide and domestic and watching military and history programs.
