Leone married German national Erich Muenter in 1901, despite the objections of her family. Erich was a college language assistant professor. In 1906 Erich was teaching and working on his Phd dissertation at Harvard University. At that time Leone was pregnant with their second child.

It was at this time that Erich was secretly feeding his wife small amounts of cyanide. Leone became ill but did not seek a doctor's attention as she was a Christian Scientist. Leone died shortly after the birth of her second daughter, Leone. Erich quickly left town and dropped his two daughters off with Leone's parents in Chicago before disappearing. Cambridge police authorities subsequently discovered the cyanide in Leone's remains and charge him with her murder. There was a national search for Erich but he had slipped into Mexico and was working for a mining operation as a bookkeeper. He later re-entered the U.S. using the name he had assumed in Mexico, Frank Holt.

Erich was capture in 1915 using the assumed name. His arrest came after he planted a bomb in the US Senate and after a failed attempt to kidnap financier J.P. Morgan. He committed suicide in jail days after his arrest. At the time of his death he was using the name Frank Holt and had remarried and had two children from that union. He had been working as a college professor at that time.
