Lieutenant Governor of California, 1927-28 District Attorney, Los Angeles County, 1928-1940. A disabled veteran of World War I, and a leader in the American Legion, Fitts became a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles and was chief deputy under District Attorney Asa Keyes. In 1926, Fitts was elected California lieutenant governor. Two years later, when Keyes was indicted for bribery, Fitts was appointed special prosecutor to take charge of the case. Fitts ran for the District Attorney's Office as well and won. Extremely ambitious, he made an unsuccessful attempt to run for governor in 1930. After that, he stayed in the District Attorney's Office unti 1940. His tenure was marked by constant controversy, and he was frequesntly the subject of grand jury investigations that suspected he was involved in bribery and corruption. The case that almost brought Fitts down was an allegation that he accepted bribes in return for dropping cases. He was indicted, but never convicted. He was defeated for reelection in 1940. During World War II, Fitts went back into the military, joining the Army Air Force. He commanded combat operations in Europe and North Africa. In 1973, Fitts committed suicide by shooting himself in his home in Three Rivers, California.
