On October 18, 1951, James married his second wife, Petrine Horstad, at Worthington, Minnesota. James spent most of his life farming in the areas of Beresford, South Dakota and Worthing, South Dakota.
James was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Lass; his sister, Margaret Harrington; his parents; and his step-mother. His survivors included his sister, Mary Farley; a half brother, Thomas Lass; and two half sisters, Charlotte and Grace Sigaty.
