The body of 13-year-old Sherry Elaine West of Warner Robins was discovered yesterday following an intensive search of the Vinson Lake in Houston County.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Southside Baptist Church in Warner Robins.

The Rev. Eugene W. Calhoun and the Rev. Vernon Brown will officiate, with burial in Magnolia Park.

Sherry, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cohen J. West of 1319 Alma Ave., Warner Robins, was swimming with Miss Wanda Gibbs, also of Warner Robins, when she went down, C.H. Alexander, chief of rescue services for Houston County Sheriff's Department said.

Dragging operations began late Tuesday evening for the missing youth and continued most of the night. However, her body was not discovered until 9:44 a.m. Wednesday by J.L. Kitchens, a fireman of the Macon Fire Department.

Miss Gibbs said she and Miss West were swimming about 50 feet from the shore of the lake, located in Vinson Valley Park near U.S. Highway 41 in Houston County.

She said Miss West went under once and though she grabbed the West girl's hand she was unable to prevent her from going under the water again. The water was approximately 6 feet deep where the girl's body was found.

The Middle Georgia Citizens Band Radio Club, the disaster unit of the Macon Motor Boat Club and the Houston County Sheriff's Department co-operated in search operations. A Salvation Army unit served coffee and sandwiches to the workers.

Honorary escorts for the funeral will be the eighth grade students of Rumble Junior High School and the Girls Auxiliary of the Southside Baptist Church.

Miss West was a native of Lyons, but she had lived in Warner Robins since 1954, coming there from Montgomery County. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and was a ninth grade student at Rumble Junior High School where she was a member of the Glee Club.

Survivors include her parents; one sister, Angela West of Warner Robins; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Davis of Mt. Vernon; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Minnie C. West of Warner Robins; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Dixon of Uvalda.
