United States Marine Corps Officer. Entering the United States Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant in 1806, he saw action in the War of 1812, when he was promoted to Brevet Major. Serving as active Commandant of the Corps from 1818 to 1819, he was appointed Commandant in 1820, a post he held until his death in 1859, a total of 38 years. He volunteered the Marine Corps for service in the southern Indian wars in the 1830s and in 1837. In a battle on the Hatcheluskee River, he was brevetted Brigadier General and given command of a brigade that included two regiments of regular army troops and a Georgia militia regiment, as well as his own Marines.
