Carl, the son of Edward J. Garza and Ernestine Garza of Refugio TX enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 1, 1967 in San Antonio TX. He arrived in Vietnam on February 2, 1968 and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Operation WORTH, at approximately 04:40H the Battalion perimeter received a barrage of enemy 82 mm mortar fire from the west wounding several men. Following Air and artillery prep fires Company D launched a frontal attack toward the summit of Hill 502 and was met with intense automatic weapons fire from an enemy hidden in fortified bunkers and spider holes. Grenades rained down on the attacking Marines as they climbed up the slopes trying to use rocks or trunks of trees that had been blasted by artillery. It became clear, that any advance would not be possible, contact was finally broken in the late afternoon with the Marines carefully descending down the steep slopes leaving several of their dead behind. Air and artillery strikes would blanket the hill before a further assault and recovery of the dead wound be attempted.

One of the casualties was PFC Garza, he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire and his remains were recovered on March 25, 1968.

Casualties:

George William Coleman
Carl Edward Garza - recovered March 25
David Lee Lipscomb - recovered March 25
Larry Joe Rodgers
Allan Paul Sheehan - recovered March 25
