Death of Mr. Joel L. Phillips
Mr. Joel L. Phillips died at his home, near Damascus, March 2d, 1901, in his eighty-third year. He was born November 12th, 1817, near Long Creek. All his life was spent in that neighborhood. On August 6th, 1832, he married a Miss Williams. Twelve children were born of this union, ten of whom are living. His first wife having died, he married Miss Zella Hobbs on January 2d, 1865, who survives. Of this union ten children were born, nine of whom are living. He leaves seventy grandchildren, seventy three great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. His body was buried at the Phillips burying ground on Sunday, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. D. F. Carter. He was one of Oconee's landmarks and always enjoyed the respect and confidence of his neighbors. After a long and useful life he has gone to his reward.
