He was Colonel in the Militia and served as 1st Lt.(entering as a Captain)for Company K of the 105th PA Regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War. During the Civil War he contracted a disease, resigned his commission in April 1863 and died 3 months after his return home. He also served several terms on the Indiana Borough Council. Henry Altman built the first building for Indiana Academy, which was later used by Indiana Normal School (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania).
