He received his early education in Edgefield County schools and graduated in 1936 from Edgefield High School. He attended Clemson College.

A World War II veteran, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in December of 1941 and saw action with the Foreign Service in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, from January 1943 to June 1945. He then returned to the U.S. and served until September 1945.

After military service, he began a career with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and met Doris Quarles. They were married on August 14, 1948. From 1950 to 1959, he returned to his family home in Edgefield to build and manage a dairy farm.

He returned to work for the SCDOT in May of 1960 in Newberry County and served as Resident Maintenance Engineer until 1971, and then as Resident Construction Engineer until 1979. He retired from SCDOT as District Construction Engineer in the Greenwood District II office in June of 1984.

He was a member of the South Main Street Baptist Church in Greenwood, and formerly served as a deacon in the First Baptist church in Newberry.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Quarles Bryan; daughter, Barbara Bryan Matzkin (Ken), Los Angeles, CA; sons, David Michael Bryan (Laura), Fort Mill, SC, John Ralph Bryan (Mary K.), Easley, Charles Leonard Bryan (Kathy), Philadelphia, PA, & Christopher Brooke Bryan (Sharon), Taylors; sister, Mary Bryan Hayes (Rudy), Augusta, GA; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Rufus Bryan & Leila Hall Bryan; seven brothers, Otis Carl Bryan, John butler Bryan, William Jennings Bryan, Olin Woodrow Bryan, James Edward Bryan, Rhett Nicholson Bryan, & Thomas Ray Bryan.

Graveside services were conducted on Saturday, January 8, 2011; Rev. Alan Quigley presided.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Jimmy Bryan, Tim Hayes, Tommy Bryan, Cooper Bryan, Will Bryan, & Phil Bryan.

Memorials may be made to the South Main Street Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1093, Greenwood, SC 29648, or to the Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.
