Son of Edyth (Wellington) and Clarence McNair LaShelle. He married (1) Mary Irene Baber. They had two children - Barbara and Joseph LaShelle, Jr. He married (2) Anita J. Watson in 1959, they were divorced in May 1972 in San Diego County, California. Joseph was trained as an electrical engineer. In 1923 he found a summer job in the old Lasky Laboratory and became so fascinated that he stayed and became the superintendent of the printing room at the Paramount Laboratory. Just two years later he became an assistant cameraman when Charles K. Clark chose him as his assistant. "The Happy Land" was Joseph's first assignment as a Cinematographer. Joseph worked with Arthur Miller at Pathe and Fox, and in 1943 he became director of photography. Joseph worked as a cinematographer in Hollywood from the 1920's -1960's. He won an Oscar at the 1944 Academy Awards for the movie Laura. "The International Dictionary of Films and Filmakers" says that Joseph was nominated for an Academy Award for cinematography 15 times, which would make him one of the most critically acclaimed artists, regardless of category, in motion picture history.
