According to Goodspeed's History of Tennessee, "he volunteered and served in the 14th Regiment, Company E, Confederate States Army; at Gettsburg he was taken prisoner and paroled. After nearly four years of faithful service, he betook himself to farming, and owned 234 acres of land along the Cumberland River. He was a member of the Baptist Church."

**Stonewall Jackson Wimberly (1868-1958) married Hallie Howard (nee Holland);
** William Wimberly (1870-1950) married Mamie Louise (nee Buhler);
** James Wimberly (1872-1949) married Ida (nee Werner);
Ida Wimberley (01 Feb. 1874 - 01 April 1874); died as infant, no issue;
Hallie Laurenna Wimberley (1876-1918) married Tommie L. Kingins;
Martha Pegue Wimberley (1878-1964) married John Wesley Gorham;
Mary Sydney Wimberley (1881-1972) married Edward Franklin Wallace;
** Martin Luther Wimberly (1883-1970) married Olga (nee Herndon).
** NOTE: when the four Wimberley boys listed above moved to Texas in 1892, they changed the spelling of last name to Wimberly. They will be referred to as Wimberly hereafter.
After death of first wife, John Strawford Petford Wimberley then married (2) Ida May Pool Crisp, and had three children:
John Rudell Wimberley (1890-1971) married Marie (nee Sills);
Verna Mavis Wimberley (1893-1917) married Marvin Sills;
***Joe Olen Wimberley (1899- ) - married (1) Lucille ( nee Sills), (2) Sallie Elizabeth (nee Crutcher).
***NOTE: Eventually changed the spelling to "Wimberly".
NOTE: John Rudell and Joe Olen married Sills sisters, and Verna Mavis married their brother, Marvin Sills.
