US Congressman. He was reading law in Corydon, Indiana when he enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War, was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company C, 17th Indiana Volunteer Infantry on May 31, 1861. During his tenure with the regiment the unit served in the Army of the Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland, and fought in the April-May 1862 Siege of Corinth, Mississippi, operations in Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama, the September 1863 Battle of Chickamuaga and the November 1863 Battle of Chattanooga. He was promoted to Captain on January 11, 1862 and Major on November 23, 1863 before being honorably mustered out on March 29, 1864. He returned to Corydon, Indiana, where he was admitted to the Indiana State Bar Association and where he established a law practice. In 1869 he moved to the Wyoming Territory, and was appointed as a Associate Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court. In 1870 he was elected as a Republican to represent the Wyoming Territory in the United States House of Representatives, and he served a single term from 1871 to 1873. His bid for re-election to the seat in 1872 was unsuccessful, and he returned to Corydon, where he practiced law until his passing in 1882.
