Billy Lee Mann of Memphis, a pioneer in men's hair-styling in Memphis, died Wednesday morning when his pickup burned at Shelby Drive and Mary Angela in Southwest Memphis, said police. Mann, 58, owner of the Roman Palace hair salon that he opened in 1968 at 2552 Poplar, was traveling west on Shelby Drive when his 1985 Chevrolet pickup ran into a ditch and struck a concrete culvert about 12:30 a.m., said Pat Rowland with the traffic investigation squad. The truck burst into flames upon impact and overturned when it hit the culvert, Rowland said. The Shelby County medical examainer will rule on the cause of death, said Police Lt. Brad Ewing. Mann was Elvis Presley's first cousin. Elvis's mother, Gladys Smith Presley, and Mann's mother, Lillian Smith Mann, were sisters. Mann opened his first hair-stylist salon for men, the Roman Palace at 2552 Poplar in 1968 after returning to Memphis from Hollywood Calif., where he was a hair stylist in the 1950s and '60s. He was a Korean War Air Force veteran. The former Jaycee was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church and was a reserve with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. He leaves his wife, Doris Jean Mann; two daughters Tanya Mann Pressgrove and Jeannie L. King; two sons, Davey R. Mann and Billy L. Mann Jr., a sister, Lola Bickerstaff all of Memphis; two brothers, Wayne Mann of Memphis and Robert Mann of Chicago, and 11 grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in the Memory Hill Gardens. (Published in The Commercial Appeal 7/2/1992)
