HOUSTON -- Dr. E. Ross Kyger III, M.D., of Houston died peacefully surrounded by his family and colleagues at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, on Thursday morning, the 26th of March 2009.

Service: Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances from five o'clock in the afternoon until half-past seven o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 30th of March, at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. At half-past seven o'clock, a brief evening prayer service will be conducted in the adjacent Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where the Rev. Dr. Laurens A. Hall, rector of the Episcopal Church of St. John the Divine, will officiate. Arrangements in Houston are entrusted to Geo. H. Lewis & Sons - The Funeral Directors Since 1936, 713-789-3005.

The memorial service will be conducted at five o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 31st of March, in the sanctuary of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Dr. Thomas J. Pace, senior pastor, will officiate. For those desiring, valet parking attendants are to be positioned at the east porte-cochere of the sanctuary.

Immediately following the service, all are invited to join the family for a reception at the River Oaks Country Club, 1600 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston.

Memorials: In lieu of usual remembrances, contributions in memory of Dr. Kyger may be directed to the Texas Heart Institute, Development Office, MC 3-117, PO Box 20345, Houston, Texas 77225-0345; or to the Hospice in the Pines, 116 S. Raguet St., Lufkin, Texas 75904.

Born on the 23rd of June 1941 in Kansas City, Mo., Ross obtained his secondary education at The Shattuck School in Faribault, Minn. He received his B.S. degree from Washington & Lee University in 1963 where he was president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and the Inter-fraternity Council. He earned his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967.

Ross's post-graduate training included an internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, the Texas Children's Hospital, and the Texas Heart Institute. During his post-graduate training, Ross was selected to receive a National Institute of Health training grant for future academic surgeons and in 1973 received the Central Pennsylvania College of Surgeons Award for research. He was Board Certified by both the American Board of General Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

He was also honored by his association with a variety of medical associations and societies, including the American Medical Association; the Texas Medical Association; the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgery Society; the Ravdin-Rhoads Surgical Society; a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Surgeons; the chairman of the Task Force on Hypertension of the Houston Heart Association; the Society of Thoracic Surgeons; the Houston Surgical Society; a vice president, president and member of the Executive Committee of the Houston Heart Association; a member of the board of directors, council vice president and president of the Board of Directors of the Texas Affiliate of the American Heart Association; and president of the Houston Chapter of the American Heart Association. Ross was also a longtime member of the Texas Surgical Society and vice president in 2002.

Dr. Kyger's appointments included attending surgeon, Texas Heart Institute from 1974-78; assistant professor of Surgery, University of Texas Medical School (Houston) 1977-78; associate professor of Surgery, University of Texas Medical School (Houston) 1977-78; clinical associate professor of Surgery, University of Texas Medical School (Houston) 1978-present; Chief, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Hermann Hospital, Houston, 1977-78; chief, Cardiovascular Surgery and director of Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratories, St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, 1978-88; chief, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Woodland Heights Hospital, Lufkin; and chief, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, Nacogdoches. Dr. Kyger also served as medical director and on the board of directors of the Hospice in the Pines in Lufkin.

Ross was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston where he was honored to serve as a member of the church's administrative board in the early to mid-1980s.

Ross was an avid hunter and fisherman who travelled the world to pursue his passion. He enjoyed his ranch in South Texas and spent many days hunting with family and friends. Ross was also a lifelong golf enthusiast and earned a varsity letter while in college. He belonged to numerous golf clubs during his life, including River Oaks Country Club in Houston, Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin, Castle Pines Club in Colorado, and Eldorado Country Club in California. A lifetime sailor, Ross loved the sea and time on it with his family and friends, particularly at the Texas Corinthian Yacht Club. Most of all, Ross loved an adventure in good company.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the physicians and nurses of St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital for their exemplary and compassionate care. Special thanks to Dr. Denton A. Cooley for his many years of friendship and mentoring.

Ross was preceded in death by his parents, the late Dr. E. Ross Kyger Jr. and Mary Jo Kyger of Fort Worth.

Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Sheila Kyger of Houston; and his family, Caroline Mitchell and her husband, John, of Houston; Christopher Boone and his wife, Medora, of Lufkin; E. Ross Kyger IV and his wife, Stephanie, of Houston; and Madeleine Testa of Houston; and four grandchildren, Jack, Will and Kate Mitchell of Houston and Laird Boone of Lufkin. He is also survived by his brother, Marshall Kyger and his wife, Arva, of Diamondhead, Miss., and his sister, Margo Kyger of Fort Worth.
