Frederick W. Matthiessen was born in Altona, Denmark (now Germany) and attended the University of Freiberg.
He emigrated in 1857, landing in Boston. He spent some time studying the coal and smelter fields in Pennsylvania but moved west to find better sources of ore, which he found in Mineral Point Wisconsin.
There he met and married Fannie Clara Möeller in 1864. He established a smelter in La Salle, Illinois and produced zinc. He came to own the Western Clock Company which later became General Time Corporation.
He was a leader of the development of the town and a benefactor to many causes. Mayor of LaSalle 1887-97
He had five children: Otto, Emma, Eda, Adele and William Jr.
