Millard County Chronicle

BABY DROWNED

JoAnn Draper, the 15-months old baby of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Draper of Hinckley was accidentally drowned in their open well in back of their home late Tuesday afternoon. The mother was feeding her five months old child and heard her oldest boy screaming. She ran out of the house and said the screaming sounded as though it was coming from Webb's corrals so she ran in that direction only to discover it was coming from Johnson's corrals in the opposite direction so she ran back. The boy was crying and screaming so hard all he could say was "Joan in ditch". Knowing the only ditch around was at Johnson's the neighbors, a distance of nearly two blocks, she got half way there before the child blurted out "No our ditch" Mrs. Draper then knew it was their well so she ran back to their place. She pulled the baby out and started applying artificial respiration. After she had worked with the child for some time she took it in her arms and ran two blocks to Vernon Love's service station. Ald was summoned and a crowd soon gathered. Men who had first aid training and Dr. Wright worked on the child for four hours, applying artificial respiration. They finally gave up at 9:30 at night. The mother said she knew the child was dead when she took it out of the well. She said it all seemed like a few minutes but the child must really have been in the well at least fifteen minutes. Funeral services were held in the Hinckley Ward Chapel, Thursday at 2 p.m. Speakers were Arthur Reeve, Bishop Harold R. Morris and Patriarch C.R. Woodbury. A poem was read by Melvin Robins, Music consisted of two vocal numbers by Ladd Cropper, accompanied by May Cropper and a selection by a trio consisting of Ruth Talbot, Bertha Love and Erma Cropper. Interment was in the Hinckley cemetery. The child is survived by her parents Donna Lewis Draper and Lawrence Draper, four brothers, Gary, Jay, Larrell and Wayne all of Hinckley and Mrs. Adeline Lewis grandparent of Lewiston.
