James, the son of Otello Carloni and Jo Anne Carloni of Buffalo NY enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 19 in Buffalo NY. He arrived in Vietnam on September 17, and was assigned to Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
While returning to the PPB (Platoon Patrol Base) from LZ (Landing Zone) Ross the fourth Marine in the column tripped a wire the vicinity of Xuan Que hamlet in Que Son District that detonated a grenade hidden inside of a C-Ration can on the side of the trail. The explosion wounded five Marines and PFC Carloni was killed as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds.
