Melvin served in the 1st Division, 26th Infantry of the US Army during WWII. He was captured in the area of Ardenness Forest and was held as a POW. He was released in May of 1945 when the Germans surrendered. He received several awards and medals, including a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star for the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, a WWII Victory Medal, a WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button, and a Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar.
Melvin worked at Ford Motor Company in St. Paul, MN before moving to Barron County, where he was a dairy farmer for 20 years. He loved to hunt with his sons in Wyoming and Wisconsin.
He is survived by: his wife, Inez Miller of Rice Lake; sons: Ron (Pat) Miller of Barron, Jim (Corine) Miller of Casper, WY, Chester (Judy) Miller of Barron; daughters: Jan (Bob) Steinhorst of Portage, Lori (Gary) Scheffel of Shell Lake; son-in-law Bill Hammann of Cameron; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Kelly Hammann, a daughter Sherry Hammann and a brother, Calvin Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM; Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Skinner Funeral Home - Rice Lake, WI with Clint Hamman officiating. Burial will be in Swede Cemetery, with Military Honors accorded by the Wisconsin State Honors Team. Pallbearers are Clay Hammann, Greg Erickson, Lance Scheffel, Russ Miller, Todd Miller, Trevor Miller. Visitation will be held from 1-2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
