PENDLETON — Barbara Jeanne Furniss (Merkling), 84, of Pendleton died Wednesday, May 11 at St. Anthony Hospital surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at Olney Cemetery.
Barbara was born October 13, 1926 in Pendleton, the first child of Daphna (Hascall) and Donald Merkling. She grew up on West Birch Creek in the Blue Mountains. She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1944 and married Wendel Vernel Furniss in 1946. Her best friends were Liane Mele and Elita Chesnut.
Barb was known for her energy, spirit, humor and love of travel. She was known as "grandma" to many young people outside her family, and her house was always full of activity. Her granddaughter Laura, in particular, was her companion through her final years of life.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Wendel, her son Randal Furniss, her brother Roland Merkling and sister Mona West. She is survived by her children Julian and Linda Furniss, her brother Berk Merkling and her five grandchildren, Chris, Tanner, Jenny, Dannie and Laura Furniss.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Laura Jeanne Furniss Educational Fund, in care of Bank of America; checks made out to Laura Furniss. Jenny Furniss is handling memorial arrangements.
