Agriculturist and member of California State Assembly. Leonard Modrahan
Landsborough was born in Australia, the son of James Landsborough and Georgiana
Sother. The family moved to California when he was young. He married Agnes
Rutter, daughter of a well-known grape grower (James Rutter). He became involved
in local and state politics, and was a strong proponent of the Japanese farmers
in the Sacramento Valley. His good name came into question when a charge of
malfeasance of duty (in his capacity of Deputy County Clerk) went to court in
1897. He was defended by Hiram W. Johnson and ultimately was acquitted of the
charges. He and his wife Agnes are buried in Florin at Elder Creek Cemetery.
