Hinckley Soldier Dies in France

Youngest Son of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Bishop Falls Victim of Pneumonia.

Word was received last Saturday of the death of Elmer Bishop the 18 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Heber L. Bishop of Hinckley in France as the result of pneumonia which was preceded by an severe attack of Spanish influenza.

Elmer Bishop left his home in Hinckley on the 11th day of July last and enlisted in the 145th Utah Artillery the following day having passed a 100 per cent physical examination. He was sent to Fort Logan, Colo. for training where by close application and strict attention to duties he received recognition. A vacancy
occurring gave him the opportunity to get over-seas at once should he be able to pass the final exam.
This examination he passed successfully and was bound for duty in France within one month after his
enlistment. An achievement reflecting much credit on the young soldier.

Young Bishop was in France over two months before he fell a victim to the fatal pneumonia and word received by his relatives were full of enthusiasm and encouragement and mentioned how fortunate he felt at being able to get into the fray within such a short period of time.

Elmer Bishop was the youngest of nine children, having seven brothers all residents of Millard County, and a sister at present a resident of Rifle, Colorado, and engaged in business at that place. He was born in Hinckley and was a graduate of the Millard Academy at that point, and was among the most popular of the younger set, and held in high esteem by all with whom he came in contact, and his passing away is deeply felt by all who knew him and his family have the sincerest sympathy of the entire community in the loss of their boy and baby brother.
