The Gettysburg Times October 27, 1911:

Anthony G Sanders, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hoffman in Fairfield, Thursday evening about 5:00 from a complication of diseases at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 22 days.
He was a Civil War veteran having served in Co. 1 22nd Cavalry and a member of James Dixon Post G A R No. 83.
He is survived by the following children, Peter and Harvey Sanders, and Mrs. Mary Peters, of Chambersburg; George E and Harry L Sanders and Mrs. Harriett Hoffman, of Fairfield; John Elmer Sanders, of Des Moines, Iowa; James S and Edward Sanders, of Gettysburg. He is also survived by two brothers, William Sanders, of Edge Grove and Edward Sanders, of Mt. Rock,and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Hoffman, of Fairfield, and Mrs. Elizabeth Grottie of York.
Funeral Saturday morning with services in the Catholic church at 10:00. Rev. John Connaghan officiating. Interment in Catholic cemetery.

The son of Adam Joseph & Susanna (Topper) Sanders, in 1850 the family lived in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Catherine Dick January 18, 1858, in Liberty Township and fathered Peter Joseph (b. 03/17/59), George Edward (b. 10/06/60), John Elmer (b. 10/??/63), Harriet Sara (b. 10/12/66), James Samuel (b. 09/04/68), Harvey Francis (b. 09/20/70), Edward Charles (b. 01/17/75), Mary Margaret (b. 10/25/77 - married a Peters), and Henry Leo (b. 12/26/79). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 11" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 29, 1864, as a private with Co. L, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry (185th Pa), and later promoted to sergeant. On June 24, 1865, as part of a war-end consolidation, he transferred to Co. L, 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865.

In 1890, he still lived in Hamiltonban Township where he was a member of Dixon Post No. 83, G.A.R. He died at his daughter's home in Fairfield, Adams County, from "chronic valvular [heart] disease."
