Eventually, Baum moved to Arizona and purchased a ranch on the Black Canyon Road north of Phoenix, where he raised Durham Shorthorns and dairy cattle.
As his health declined, Baum sold his range and cattle. Baum's son E. W. was a physician in Bisbee, Arizona, so he and his wife traveled there occasionally when he needed long-term medical care.
Baum died 6 Aug 1907 and was originally buried in Porter Cemetery. His remains were moved to Greenwood 1915.
