Dr Granville C Alfred was the son of John Alford and Nancy Hunter. He married first Martha "Patsy" Ray, 14 October 1830, in Mercer County, Kentucky. He was widowed when she died in 1852. He married second Louisa Jane "Lucy" Trent. Dr Alfred was murdered, 27 May 1873, at his home near Duncan, Kentucky, by two of his former slaves, brothers George and Edward Alfred. They had been emancipated after the Civil War but were still employed by the Alfred family. Edward was never tried, but George was found guilty and hung. Dr Granville's wife, Lucy, was tried as an accomplice but acquitted. Dr Alfred was buried at Grapevine Christian Church Cemetery in Mercer County.
