Preceded by husband Tom C. Clark, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice, died peacefully in her home in Washington, DC., on June 13, 2002. She was 100 years old. Born in Cleburne, Tx., on April 29, 1902, the daughter of William F. and Rowana Hill Ramsey. Her father served as a Judge on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, a Justice on the Texas Supreme court, and the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Mary met her husband while attending the University of Texas in Austin and they married in 1924. They first lived in Dallas where Mr. Clark established his law practice. They had three children: Tom C. Clark, Jr.; Ramsey Clark; and Mimi Clark. When Government service called, the Clarks went to Washington, DC and served in the Department of Justice. In 1937 Tom Clark was the first person to have worked his way up through the ranks of the Department of Justice and became U.S. Attorney General when President Harry Truman appointed him to the position in 1945. In 1949, Truman appointed him as Associate Justice to the U.S. Supreme Court. He served for eighteen years, resigning in 1967 when President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed their son Ramsey Clark U.S. Attorney General. Mary Clark was a lady whose charm and warmth were admired and appreciated by all who knew her.
