Kathryn was born on the family farm in Gregory County, SD to Joseph and Catherine Slaughter. In 1926, she moved to Lincoln to attend the University of Nebraska, receiving a BA degree in 1931. She was then employed as a secretary for an accounting firm for a number of years. In 1940 she married Eugene Reed, a renowned professor of geology at UNL.
Kathryn made a tremendous contribution to her community through her involvement in many philanthropic organizations.
