In 1862, the 6th was engaged at Battle of Shiloh (Apr 6-7). The 6th Iowa held their advanced position on Apr 6 with tenacity giving Buell time to bring in reinforcements at Pittsburg Landing snatching victory from defeat. When all support had been driven back the 6th retired under a terrible fire.
