Continental Congressman, US Congressman. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and emigrated to South Carolina, where he practiced medicine. He served as a surgeon in the Revolutionary War. Elected as a Delegate from South Carolina to the Continental Congress, serving from 1787 to 1788. Elected as a Representative from South Carolina to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1789 to 1793. Apppointed as United States Treasurer by President Thomas Jefferson, serving from 1801 to 1828, when he died in office.
