US Congressman. Elected as a Jacksonian to represent Virginia's 22nd District in the US House of Representatives, he served from 1831 until his death. This marked his only time in public office. Johnston was born at Longwood near Farmville, Virginia, and was educated at home. He was admitted to the bar in 1818 and practiced law in Abingdon for a dozen years prior to his election to Congress. Johnston drowned in an accident near the docks at Alexandria, Virginia; he was 37. Interment was at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. He was the brother of Civil War Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston, and uncle of US Senator John Warfield Johnston.
