A young member of the Massena rescue squad was killed late Friday night when the ambulance he was riding in traveled off the north side of Route 37 and came to rest in a rock culvert.
According to the Ogdensburg-based state police, the dead man, James E. Losey, 19, of 23 Orchard Road, Massena and Lloyd J. Compo, 23, of 58 Pine Street, Massena, were returning from Syracuse after transporting a patient at about 11:30 p.m. Friday.
Compo lost control of the ambulance about a mile and a quarter east of the Taggart Road, between Red Mills and Waddington. He later told police that he had fallen asleep at the wheel.
Losey was in the rear of the 1976 ambulance at the time, on a stretcher. Losey was pronounced dead at the scene. County coroner David E. Donaldson termed the death accidental, and attributed it to a skull fracture and neck injuries.
Compo was taken to the A. Barton Hepburn Hospital suffering from a fractured pelvis, a contusion to the right foot and a cut to the right hand.
The accident was investigated by state troopers from Ogdensburg and Massena.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Massena.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond (Bud) Losey; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Rene (Lillian) LaTreille of Massena; three sisters, Joanne, Cheryl and Sheila, all at home, and several cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was born September 3, 1957, the son of Raymond (Bud) and Mary Morrow Losey. He graduated from Massena High School in 1976, after which he volunteered for the rescue squad, in which he was very active.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Massena Rescue Squad softball team.
County rescue squads are asked to lower flags to half staff until Tuesday.
