ALEX ERSKINE, PIONEER ALTA RESIDENT, IS DEAD
AUBURN (Placer Co.), Feb,23. — Word was received here yesterday of the death of Alex E. Erskine, pioneer resident of Alta, at the veterans' home in Yountville at the age of 84 years. The funeral services will be held at Yountville Monday.
Leaving home in Maine at the age of 12 years, Erskine became a drummer boy in the Union Army. Shortly after the Civil War he came to Placer County. The deceased was for forty years a prominent figure in the lumbering industry of Placer and Nevada counties from the days of the bull team until eight years ago, when he retired to make his residence in the veterans' home at Yountville. He requested to be buried with his comrades at the cemetery in Yountville.
The deceased held membership in the Masonic lodge and was identified with lodges at Dutch Flat, Auburn and Colfax. Shortly before his death was presented with an insignia showing fifty years of active membership in the lodge of Odd Fellows.
The deceased was an uncle of E.T. ErskIne of Auburn, Fred and Everett Erskine of Roseville, Jack and Ed Erskine of Berkeley. Mrs. E.J. Brannigan of Woodland and Mrs. C W. Ludwig of Corning.
