He was born February 1, 1936, in Henrietta, Texas to Frank and Lillian Lerner. He graduated high school from St. Gregory's Catholic High School in Shawnee, OK. He earned his degree in Geology at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, TX.
Jim worked most of his life as a Geologist for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and was involved in the construction of many reservoirs in the Tulsa District throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, including the Council Grove reservoir.
Jim was a spiritual person and was a very dedicated, active member of St. Rose Catholic Church in all functions of the church, including the Knights of Columbus. One of his recent passions was restoring and maintaining the Calvary Cemetery. He took pride in keeping the cemetery looking its best.
Even though he chose to retire in Council Grove, he stayed true to his roots and remained an avid Texas Longhorns fan. Jim's family was very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them and watching his grandkids in their sports and other activities.
Preceding him in death were his parents and sisters, Anne Kusnerik and Frances Harwell.
Survivors include Bobby & Georgie Alexander, who he thought of as his second mother and father, of Council Grove; his wife, Barbara Lerner; daughter, Janalie Simmons and husband Nick of Mustang, OK; son, Jimmy and wife Jan of Council Grove and son Joe and wife Andrea of Shawnee, KS; twin brother, John Lerner of Henrietta, TX; sister, Carolyn Morath of Wichita Falls, TX; brother-in-law, John Kusnerik of Gafveston, TX. Grandchildren include: Danielle Simmons of Burleson, TX; Nicollette Simmons of Mustang, OK; Bracey and Peyton Lerner of Council Grove; William Lerner of Shawnee, KS.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 18th, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M., Monday, May 16th, at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rose Catholic Church, which will go towards the cemetery fund.
