Lydia Eunice Hoover Hulett Guelzow, our loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great, Great Grandmother, and Sister left us on May 18, 2001. She died peacefully at the Idaho Falls Care Center where she had lived for several years.
Lydia was born November 13, 1902, in Norton, Kansas, to Clarence Hoover and Katherine Hoover. When she was very young, the family came west in a covered wagon. They settled in Murray, Utah, and some years later moved to Firth, Idaho, where they established a homestead. They had a fine farm. Her father built all of the farm buildings and was the only blacksmith for miles around. Tragically, her father Clarence was killed in a farm accident. This left Lydia' s mother alone to care for nine children with one on the way. Lydia and the older children worked hard to help with the chores and care for the younger children. After some years, her mother remarried and sold the farm. They bought a restaurant in Firth where Lydia worked for some time. At the age of fifteen, Lydia and one of her sisters went to Idaho Falls where they worked in the Roger Brothers Seed House. For a time, she worked as a waitress and telephone operator.
Lydia married Charles Russell Hulett in 1919. He was just home from France where he served in the armed forces during World War I. They were the parents of four children when Charles died of war related injuries at the age of 30. Like her mother, now Lydia was left alone to raise her children. She struggled valiantly through the great depression for their survival.
She married Harry Guelzow in 1939. They had three children, which she also raised alone. Lydia had a gift for making light of the direst of circumstances and was loving and kind when she had nothing else to give. She was curious about her world and passed on her love of learning to her family. She loved to sing and laugh and dance and even wrote some lovely poetry. For the last several years she has been a resident at the Idaho Falls Care Center. She was often cheerful and kind, and had an infectious giggle that delighted those who cared for her. She was a favorite resident at the Care Center and will be greatly missed.
Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the wonderful people who cared for her so tenderly there. She is survived by two daughters, Marcene Conrad of Anaheim, California, and Barbara Joy Marler of Idaho Falls; four sons, Marion R. Hulett of Jerome, Idaho, Val Guelzow of Tonapah, Nevada, Don Guelzow of Kennett, Missouri, and Harry Guelzow of Idaho Falls; two sisters, Bertha Belville of Spokane, Washington, and Goldie Colborn of Idaho Falls. She was the Grandmother of 15, Great- Grandmother of 30, and the Great-Great-Grandmother of 17 children. She was preceded in death by her son Charles E. Hulett. An informal memorial service will be held in her honor at Woods Chapel of the Pines, 273 N. Ridge Ave., in Idaho Falls on Tuesday, May 22 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in the family plot in Basalt, Idaho. There will be a no-host dinner following the services at North' s Restaurant. All who knew and loved her are invited to join the family in remembering her and the gladness she brought to us all. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Hospice of Eastern Idaho, 703 John Adams Parkway, Idaho Falls, ID 83401. Family tribute
