August was born in Braunschweig (Brunswick), Germany. The year 1851 given as his date of birth is younger than what his early records indicate. He was born between 1849 and 1851. His parents are Christoph Risling and Sophia Marie Lehr. His siblings are Christopher, Doretta (Dora) and Mary. Mary is the only sibling born in the US.

In a letter to his niece, Nina (Daniells) Woodward, he states the family surname, Risling, is correctly spelled Rissling with the double S. He also claims the surname was Von Rissling prior to the Napoleonic Wars.

August and his brother Christopher were miners in Colorado in the late 1870's and early 1880's. August moved to northern California before 1888 where he married and raised his family.

August fathered a child with a Hoppa Indian woman named Maggie Charley. They did not marry. Maggie then married George Simpson. The son of Maggie and August was named David. During the life times of Maggie and George Simpson, David was known as Swanston Simpson. In about 1900 Swanston returned to the name David Risling. He later became a chief in the Hoppa Tribe named Chief Su Worhrom. His son David Jr. was an educator and championed Indian rights and education.
