William Carl Witt was born on 4 or 5 June 1837 at Crab Orchard, in Keokee, Virginia, to Edmund Witt and Anna Thompson. He appeared on the US Census of 1850 in Lee County, Virginia. William became a farmer and married Elizabeth Clarkston, 25 June 1857, in Lee County. The Clark(ston) and Witt families were intertwined, as there were several marriages between the two. William and Elizabeth's children were James, Mary, John, Martha, Alpha, Wiley, Louisa, William, Benjamin, Arminda, and Sylvester Witt. On 16 September 1861, William enlisted in the 64th Virginia Infantry, Company A at Camp Lee County, Virginia. He was listed as absent and sick on 13 December 1862 and he deserted the Union Army on 1 March 1864. William and Elizabeth appeared on the Census of 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 in Lee County. In 1900, they were living in Sulphur Springs, Virginia. A granddaughter was also living in their home. William and Elizabeth appeared again in 1910 and 1920 in Wise County, Virginia. They were living in Richmond, Virginia, in 1920. William Carl Witt died, 18 February 1921, aged 84, in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and was buried at Glencoe Cemetery.
