Son of Niels & Christina Nielson
Automobile Accident

Millard County Progress

Joseph Nielson, 68, of Hinckley, met instant death Wednesday noon on the highway about half way between Scipio and Holden. He was traveling north, having been to Fillmore to the bank on his way to Salina. Tourists back of Mr. Nielson reported that the car swerved suddenly to the wrong side of the road, turned sharply to the right and as it turned back to the left the second time, turned over completely. Mr. Nielson was thrown through the top of the car, badly crushing his skull. Tracks indicated that the car turned over only once.

Three years ago, Mr. Nielson narrowly escaped serious injury when his car turned over just north of Cove Fort. Lorenzo Brunson brought him in at that time and it was found he had suffered a broken collar bone and several broken ribs.

It is not known why Mr. Nielson turned his car suddenly to the wrong side of the road and back. It is possible that he went to sleep for a moment, waking to find himself on the wrong side of the road. It is also possible that he turned to avoid hitting a stray animal or that he suffered a slight feeling of illness rather suddenly which caused him to lose control of the car.

He was born in Weber County, September 18, 1867, the son of Niels and Christina Nielson. He married Emma E. Simpkins in the St. George Temple May 3, 1888. They spent their early married life in Circleville and then moved to Twin Falls, Idaho. The family moved to Hinckley where they have since resided twenty-six years ago. Mr. Nielson was a farmer, with a happy and optimistic disposition. He was a frequent visitor in Fillmore and was well known here. He was active in Church and civic work.

Surviving are his wife, and the following sons and daughters; Joseph S. Nielson and Mrs. Clarence Bishop of Salt Lake City, Lafe Nielson of Clarkston, Marlowe Nielson of New York City, Mrs. Wanda Barnes of Ruth, Nevada, Mrs. Evelyn Morris of Oasis and Mrs. Ada Barnes of Hinckley; sixteen grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Ordena Dalley of Summit. Three sons preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held in Hinckley today (Friday) and burial will be in Hinckley.
