On July 5, 1919 while arresting a suspect, Melrose Police Officer Anton Gaetz was violently assaulted and injured in his abdomen.

Shortly after this incident, Officer Gaetz developed cancer in the area of his injury. The Minnesota Supreme Court decreed:

"the evidence in this case is sufficient to sustain a finding that an injury received by a deceased officer while in the course of his employment was a contributing case of his death."

Officer Gaetz died on September 22, 1919, less than three months after the attack. He and his wife Helen are buried in Row 3 of Section C in St. Mary's Cemetery, Melrose, Minn.
