Shortly after this incident, Officer Gaetz developed cancer in the area of his injury. The Minnesota Supreme Court decreed:
"the evidence in this case is sufficient to sustain a finding that an injury received by a deceased officer while in the course of his employment was a contributing case of his death."
Officer Gaetz died on September 22, 1919, less than three months after the attack. He and his wife Helen are buried in Row 3 of Section C in St. Mary's Cemetery, Melrose, Minn.
