CARLSBAD--A funeral for Vera O. Hernandez, 90, of West Riverside Drive, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Gardens. Friends may call today.

Mrs. Hernandez died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vera O. Hernandez was born Tuesday, July 25, 1911, in Ballinger, Texas, to Irvin and Ida Durham.

She moved to Carlsbad in 1941 and married Antonio Hernandez in 1952.

Mrs. Hernandez was a co-owner of Cortez Restaurant until she retired in 1996.

She was a member of First Baptist Church for many years, was a member of Carlsbad Women's Club, Lions Club Auxiliary, Riverside Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Her hobbies included ceramics and painting, but her most important hobby was taking care of her grandchildren.

Her parents; a son, Kenneth Mears; a daughter, VerDean Herring; a step-son, George Hernandez; and two sisters preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Eldon L. Mears and wife, Joan, of Albuquerque; a stepson, Tony Hernandez and wife, Frances, of Carlsbad; a daughter, Yvetta Scott of Albuquerque; sisters, Sammie Ward of Las Cruces and Wilma Basden of Texas; and four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
