Professional Football Player. For eight seasons (1979 to 1986), he played at the running-back position in the National Football League with the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Born Ronald Edward Springs, he attended Lafayette High School (Virginia) and Coffeyville Junior College (Kansas), before transferring to Ohio State University where he played collegiate football under legendary coach Woody Hayes. Selected by Dallas during the 5th round of the 1979 NFL Draft Springs appeared in 112 career regular season games, compiling 2,519 rushing yards with 28 touchdowns. His most productive season was in 1981, when he rushed for 625 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. Springs, who suffered from debilitating diabetes received a kidney transplant (donated by former teammate Everson Walls) in 2007 and slipped into a coma during the surgery without ever regaining consciousness. He was the father of former NFL defensive-back Shawn Springs.
