Dan, the son of Lawrence Van Erem and Myrtle Van Erem, the brother of Lawrence Jr., sisters Lorraine V. Gay, Deloris St. Thomas, Shirley Hyer, and Nancy Badeau, all of Green Bay WI enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 28, 1967. He arrived in Vietnam on May 29, 1968, and was assigned to H&S Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

A patrol from Company C was on a road sweep of Route 4 near the village complex of Trung An in Dien Ban District when they were hit by hostile small arms fire from three different positions. During a brief fire fight two Marines were killed and one man was wounded. LCpl Van Erem was one of the casualties; he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire.
