James Ehrlich Bennett, Jr

J.E. Bennett Jr., 77, died March 30, 2004, at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a native and lifelong resident of Pierce County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ehrlich Bennett Sr. And Pearl Manning Bennett; his sisters, Quindolyn Flannery and Johnnie Bennett; and his brothers, Calvin Bennett and Phelon Bennett.

He was retired from Farm Credit Service, where he served as president of the southeast district with 30 years of service. He was also an avid farmer. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Blackshear where he served as chairman of the benevolence committee and was a former Sunday school teacher. He had previously been a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, church clerk, treasurer and Sunday school teacher. He was also an active volunteer, teaching Sunday school class at Pierce County Nursing Home, and was a former chairman and the current treasurer of the Pierce County Food Pantry. He formerly served on the board of the Altamaha Soil and Water Conservation District and the Council on Aging.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ann T. Bennett of Blackshear; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Brenda Bennett and Rodney and Rhonda Bennett, all of Blackshear; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Shelby Mattox and Susan and Randy Beckner, all of Blackshear; four grandchildren and their spouses, Marcie and Eric Claas of Nashville, Tenn., Scott Mattox of Blackshear, Kyle and Arveida Bennett of Monterey, Calif., and Gina Mattox of Blackshear; a great-grandchild, Landon Claas; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Faye Bennett, Wallace and Linda Bennett and Stanley and Ann Bennett, all of Blackshear; and a sister and brother-in-law, JoAnna and James Bridges of Valdosta.

Funeral services were held April 3 at First Baptist Church of Blackshear. Interment was in the Ramah Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Pierce County Food Pantry. Smith Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of arrangements.
