Confederate veteran.
He was the son of Benjamin and Nancy (Hayes) Coffey.
He enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. D, 26th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, C.S.A. on Sept. 6, 1861, at Camp Lillard, Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee.
He was promoted to Sergeant in January 1863. He was mortally wounded on March 15, 1863, in the Battle of Chattanooga.
