Field Worker's Note-
James M. Tittle was one of the pioneer Cherokee citizens who was here when Vinita started. He owned a farm 1 1/2 mile northwest of Vinita, a part of which was sold to the state for the Northeastern Hospital for the insane.
He operated a pool hall and cider joint in the first town of Downingsville and the city authorities poured out his "Jumbo" and he brought suit against the town of Downingsville for damages, and it has been said that Cornelius Boudinot used this as a pry to get the name of the town changed to Vinita. He told the city authorities, that if they would change the name of the town, that Tittle would not collect the damages. The name was changed, and Tittle never collected his damages.
