Elbert L. Urfer, 91, of Olney and formerly of Decatur, died at 1:50 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Burgin Manor in Olney.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Reverend Jeremy Henson officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in rural Richland County with full military rites conducted by Olney veterans.
Mr. Urfer was born May 26, 1919, in Shelby County, the son of Clarence and Edith (Harding) Urfer. He married Letha Ivene Montgomery. She preceded her in death on November 5, 2010. He retired from Illinois Secretary of State office. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of American Legion Post #30 and Life Member of VFW Post #4226. He was also a member of Newton Masonic Lodge. He was a graduate of Willow Hill High School.
Mr. Urfer is survived by his son, Loren Urfer and his wife, Sue, of Olney; grandson, Austin Urfer, of Olney; sisters, Geraldine Smith and her husband, James, of Wheaton, and Betty Wever, of Edwardsville; brother, Delmar Urfer, of Yale; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Edith Urfer; wife, Letha Ivene Urfer; two sisters, Naomi and Corine Urfer; and three brothers, John, Morris and Norman Urfer.
Memorials may be made to American Legion Color Guard or East Richland Foundation for Academic Excellence.
