Walter drove an amounition truck on the front lines in the European Theater in WWII. He earned several medals including three bronze stars. He was a life long- long haul truck driver with the exception of the year he owned and ran a motel, restaurant, and trailer park in Daytona Beach, Florida. He also owned and ran his own tire business and deep sea fishing boat. He was an avid pilot who loved the skies. He is deeply missed.

He is the father of four children: Robert Eugene Oliver, Elizabeth Ann Rose, Anita Susan Abney, and Sandra Lea Botkin. He has six grandchildren: Robert Lee Oliver, Pasalea Oliver (deceased), Eric Rose, Melissa Rene St. John, Amanda Leann Chasteen, and Christopher Dale Botkin. His the great grandfather of six children.
