Homer Eugene Black was born Dec. 16, 1896 in Prairie City, which became Baldwin City, Douglas County, Kansas. He was the fourth of five children born to Harry James and Eva Jane ASHBY Black. The family moved to Colorado when Homer was eight years old.

Homer was an accountant. He served as a Private First Class during World War I. Homer married Ruthanna RANSOM on Dec. 18, 1920 in Danville, Illinois. They later lived in California. Homer and Ruthanna had two children:
1) Ruth Eileen BLACK
2) Eugene Ransom Black
