MRS. L. L. MARTZ IS CLAIMED BY DEATH
Pioneer Lady Passed Away This Morning After Long Illness

Mrs. Levi L. Martz, aged seventy-seven, one of the county's highly respected pioneer women, died shortly after midnight, Monday night, at her home at Washington and Scott street. Mrs. Martz had been failing in strength very rapidly since last Thursday and her relatives have been in constant attendance at her bedside for several days. She has suffered from a form of stomach trouble for several years, having been in very frail health and her death was due to a complication brought on by this ailment. Her condition became serious only on last Thursday.
Mrs. Martz was born Martha Samantha Clark, daughter of Allen and Florinda Clark, on September 5, 1840, on a farm a little north of Murray, and was reared to womanhood in this county. She was married on Sept. 6, 1859 at Eaglesville to Levi L. Martz and they made their home at Murray. Mrs. Martz's mother had died previous to her marriage and for some time after she had been married she made a home for four of her brothers and sisters.
Mr. Martz served for over four years as a soldier in the Union army and during this time Mrs. Martz maintained their home and cared for their two children. The family remained at Murray until 1868, when they moved to Wayne County, Ohio, where Mr. Martz was enaged in business with his father-in-law, Allen Clark, returning to Bluffton in 1879 and making their home here ever since.
Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Martz, and of these two survive, namely: Florinda, wife of George Silver, of Wooster, Ohio, who, with her husband, is here, and Jessie J., wife of Augustus N. Plessinger, of this city. Cecilia, who was the wife of William Guoynes, passed away while Mr. Martz was in Cuba as a member of the 160th in the Spanish-American war and Eva E., who was the wife of A. Z. Rothermal, died in 1904. Mrs. Martz is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Martz's own generation includes the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Sarah J. Nelson, recently deceased; Mary L. Clark, long since deceased; Miss Thamar E. Clark, of the E. S. Walmer & Co. store; Lucinda Adaline Kapp, deceased, wife of John Kapp, formerly of Bluffton; Wilson D. Clark, of Bluffton, and David Wilmer Clark, of Bluffton. Mrs. Lillian Clark Steele, of Knox County, O., and Elsworth Clark, of Columbus, O., are a half sister and a half brother. Miss Thamar Clark is absent from the city, spending a vacation visit with relatives in Ohio and her Bluffton relatives have not yet been able to get in touch with her to notify her of her sister's death.
Mrs. Martz was a woman of great patriotism and has always been devotedly interested in patriotic matters. Until her health began to fail she was an active member of the Woman's Relief Corps. Only in the last few weeks she had completed knitting a pair of socks for the Red Cross. Her grandson, Kenneth Rothermal, is in France, first as a member of the American Ambulance and now as a member of the aviation corps, and his activity has been the source of the most intense interest on the part of Mrs. Martz.
Mrs. Martz became a member of the Presbyterian church at Murray at the age of twelve years, under the pastorate of Rev. W. M. Donaldson. For years she has been a member of the First Presbyterian church of this city and before her health began to fail was a dovoted worker in the interest of the congregation.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday afternoon at four o'clock at the residence at Washington and Scott streets, Rev. T. J. Simons and Rev. G. G. Copland will officiate and the interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
A message of condolence was received by Mr. Martz on Monday afternoon from the members of the 160th who held their reunion at Wabash yesterday. Members from Bluffton reported to the reunion that Mrs. Martz was in a very critical condition and a unanimous expression of sympathy was telgraphed at once.
