Brookhaven – Mrs. Etta Marie May Montgomery Mayer, 90, the grandmother of Enterprise-Journal reporter William David "Bill" Moak, died Monday in Brookmeadow Nursing Home in Brookhaven, where she was a resident. Visitation will be 5-10 tonight in Brookhaven Funeral home and will continue there at 8 a.m. Wednesday until services at 10 a.m. in the chapel. The Rev. Jim Yarbrough and the Rev. Frank Higginbotham will officiate, with grandson Thomas A. Moak III of Alexandria, La., providing the eulogy. Burial will be in Johnston's Station Cemetery.
Born Jan 18, 1896, in Lincoln County, Mrs. Mayer was the daughter of William Nathaniel May and Rebecca Elizabeth Carr May. A longtime school teacher at Johnston's Station School, she was a member of New Zion Baptist Church in Lawrence County and taught Sunday school in several other counties.
Mrs. Mayer was preceded in death by her first husband, Lucas Seymour Montgomery, and a grandson, Randall Montgomery Moak.
Other survivors include her husband. L. W. Mayer of Monticello; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas A. (Willa Jean) Moak of Bogue Chitto; a son-in-law, Thomas A. Moak Jr. of Bogue Chitto; one grandchild, James Lucas Moak of Alexandria; three sisters, Mrs. A.C. Crain of Bogalusa, La., Mrs. Beulah Oden of Amsterdam, Ohio, and Mrs. David Byrd of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews.
